How much does branding cost in the UK? A 2026 price guide for small businesses
The short answer: in 2026, UK small businesses typically pay £500–£2,000 for a logo, £1,500–£5,000 for a logo with brand guidelines, £900–£2,500 for a brand audit and £2,000–£15,000 for brand strategy. A full rebrand from an agency often runs £5,000–£20,000 or more. These ranges come from published UK pricing guides, and the biggest price drivers are who does the work, how much research is included, and whether VAT is added.
Branding costs in the UK vary widely. You might pay £500 for a logo or several thousand pounds for a strategy-led rebrand. But those quotes aren't necessarily for the same kind of work.
The distinction matters. A business with inconsistent visuals doesn't necessarily need a new brand strategy. Equally, a business struggling to explain why customers should choose it may gain very little from a new logo. In my work, the most useful early question is often not "what should we change?" but "what should we keep?"
This guide brings together published UK pricing so you can see what you're paying for, where the costs come from, and which services are worth considering before committing to a larger project. Because HALO publishes its prices, I've included them too, with their scope, so you can compare like with like.

Why branding prices vary so much
Who does the work. UK freelance designers usually charge £20–£75 an hour, and London rates can reach £150 an hour or more. Small studios price by project. Larger agencies add account management and overheads, which is one reason the same deliverable can be priced very differently.
How much strategy is included. A logo-only brief usually focuses on visual execution. A strategy-led project goes further, examining what the business stands for, who it needs to reach and why customers should choose it. That research and thinking is where most of the cost difference comes from.
What "brand guidelines" means. One studio's guidelines are a two-page logo sheet; another's are a 40-page system. Ask for an example before comparing quotes.
VAT. VAT-registered agencies add 20%, and many published prices exclude it. If your own business is VAT-registered you can usually reclaim that VAT, so compare quotes on a like-for-like basis: both including VAT, or both excluding it.
What each service costs, and when you need it
Brand audit: £900–£2,500
A brand audit checks whether your website, brochure and other touchpoints say the same thing, and whether that is what customers need to hear. It's a sensible first step when you feel something is off but can't say what. Automated tools sit at the bottom of the market; agency audits for sectors such as law or accountancy can cost far more.
Brand strategy and positioning: £2,000–£15,000
Strategy defines what your business can genuinely claim that competitors can't, and how to say it. You need it before a rebrand, when you're entering a new market, or when customers can't tell you apart from competitors. Fixed-fee packages from smaller consultancies sit at the lower end; workshop-led agency programmes for mid-sized firms often start around £3,500. The difference is usually how much primary research, how many workshops and how many stakeholders are involved.
Tone of voice and messaging (verbal identity): £500–£2,000
This covers what you say about your business and how you say it: your one-line description, key messages and writing rules. A messaging guide can often be applied more quickly than a full visual rebrand, particularly across websites, proposals and sales materials.
Logo design: £500–£2,000
Freelancers typically charge £500–£1,000 and small agencies £1,000–£2,000. Online logo makers are cheaper but rarely give you exclusive rights or files that work in print.
Visual identity and brand guidelines: £1,500–£5,000
A logo plus colours, fonts, image style and the rules for using them. This is what keeps your brand looking like one business across your website, social media and print.
AI search visibility audit: £300–£1,500
A newer service, so prices are less settled. More customers now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI for recommendations before they visit a website. An audit checks what these tools say about your business and where they get it from. Free automated checkers exist; paid audits add interpretation and fixes. Few UK agencies publish a price for this yet.
Social media templates: £300–£800
Branded post templates, often in Canva, so your team can publish without a designer. Ongoing social media management is a separate monthly cost, typically from around £1,200 a month at agencies.
"My branding feels weak." Where should I start?
When a business tells me its branding feels weak, I don't start by asking what it wants to redesign. I start with what's no longer working, and whether branding is actually the problem. Most small businesses don't need everything at once:
- You're not sure what's wrong: start with a brand audit. It tells you what to fix, and what to keep, before you spend on design.
- You sound like everyone else: you need positioning before new visuals, or the new logo will have nothing distinctive to express.
- Your position is clear but your materials look inconsistent: go straight to visual identity and guidelines.
- Your team describes the business differently: a tone of voice and messaging guide.
- Customers can't find you, or AI tools describe someone else: look at your Google Business Profile and how AI tools describe you, alongside your messaging.
How to choose a branding agency: 6 questions to ask
- Can you give me a fixed price in writing? A clear scope and price protects you from surprises.
- Who will actually do the work? The person who pitches isn't always the person who delivers.
- Do you start by looking at evidence? Good branding starts from what your business really does well and what customers value, not from a mood board.
- What exactly is in the deliverables? Ask to see an example of the guidelines or report.
- Is VAT included, and can I reclaim it?
- How will the work show up beyond the logo? Ask how it will translate into clearer website messaging, stronger search relevance and a more consistent brand presence.
Where HALO fits
At HALO Branding, I work with businesses that need to understand what their brand is really communicating, and whether that matches the value they deliver.
I don't believe every branding problem needs a rebrand. Sometimes the issue is positioning. Sometimes it's how a business explains its offer. And sometimes the strategy is sound, but the identity no longer reflects the company behind it.
That's why I offer a focused Brand Clarity Review before recommending a larger piece of work. It gives you a clearer view of what needs attention, what can stay, and where your investment is likely to make the most difference.
HALO is an independent, founder-led brand consultancy based in Kingston upon Thames, working with UK businesses in person and remotely, in English and Korean.
Frequently asked questions
Is £500 enough for branding?
£500 usually buys a logo from a freelancer or a focused review of your current brand, not a full identity with strategy and guidelines.
Do I need brand strategy before a logo?
If you're unsure what makes your business different, yes. A logo designed without a clear position tends to be judged on taste alone. If your position is already clear, a designer can work from a short brief.
How long does branding take?
It depends on scope. As a guide from HALO's own services: a focused brand review takes 5–7 working days, a logo 7–10 working days, a visual identity with guidelines 3–4 weeks, and strategy and positioning 2–3 weeks. Agency rebrands with workshops and rollout usually take longer.
Do UK branding agencies charge VAT?
VAT-registered agencies add VAT at 20%, and many published prices exclude it. If your business is VAT-registered you can usually reclaim it. Always ask whether a quote includes VAT.
Can I just use an AI logo generator or Canva?
For testing an idea, yes. For a business you plan to grow, you'll usually want a logo you own exclusively, files that work in print, and a look built on what your business stands for.
